Should Your Range Hood Be Wider Than Your Cooktop?

Although some residential codes do not require you to install a range hood, we consider it to be a necessity in every kitchen. A range hood helps capture smoke, steam, grease, carbon monoxide, and any other contaminants emitted while cooking. Range hoods improve air quality, provide added ventilation, and even remove excess heat. Essential, right?

Aside from their functionality, range hoods can enhance the look of your kitchen, too. A wide range of options allows it to pull double-duty as a style choice as well as an appliance. A bell-shaped, traditional wooden range hood, for instance, is sure to steal the spotlight in an all-white kitchen. Simply put, range hoods offer more than function.

So, should a range hood be wider than a cooktop? Yes! Ideally, a range hood should be wider than your cooktop. While most range hoods are the same size as cooktops, a wider hood provides a number of benefits.

One, you know you’re venting out all the rising pollutants, thanks to increased coverage. A wider hood also sucks the smoke and steam at a much quicker pace compared to an average-sized hood. This especially comes in handy when you burn something—which is inevitable—and smoke fills up the kitchen. The wider hood will clear the air in minutes! Lastly, it saves on power. How? Even at its lowest speed, a wider hood sucks out contaminated air more efficiently compared to a smaller one, which means less strain is placed on the motor. Win-win.

If you decide to purchase a wider range hood, make sure it’s approximately six inches wider than your cooktop, extending three inches on both sides. For an outdoor grill area, a hood up to an additional 12 inches wider is better because outdoor air tends to rise quickly, making it harder to absorb.

Here are a few factors to take into consideration when deciding whether your hood should be wider or the same size as your cooktop.

Small Stoves Can Get Away With a Similar-sized Range Hood

Although a wider hood is recommended, a compact stove can do just fine with a similar-sized hood. Smaller cooktops emit less smoke and steam due to their minute surface area. In this farmhouse kitchen, the traditional wood canopy hides the range hood away from view.

Similar-sized Hoods Bring in Balance

Should Your Range Hood Be Wider Than Your Cooktop?

Do you want to achieve visual balance? Consider matching the size of both the cooktop and hood, especially if your cooktop is the focal point of your kitchen, like in this space. A large hood—particularly one that stands out—may put the spotlight on visual disproportion.

Larger Cooktops Need a Wider Range Hood

A larger cooktop offers a big enough space to cook several dishes at once. This means that more smoke, steam, and heat are also released at once. A wider cooktop is more of a necessity in such cases. Opt for an insert hood for a flawless finish.

A Chimney Hood Makes for a Statement Piece

A chimney range hood is perfect for a space that lacks a focal point. Go with a bold-painted or wooden hood for an eye-stopping effect. Since this chimney hood’s flue reaches the ceiling, overhead kitchen cabinets won’t work. Installing open shelves might just be the answer.

An Under Cabinet Hood Saves Space

If you’d like a range hood that exudes an ultra-modern vibe, opt for an under cabinet hood, which is usually mounted at the bottom of wall cabinets. Under-cabinet hoods allow you to keep upper cabinet storage while still benefiting from superb ventilation afforded by the insert.

A Chimney Hood Can Help Complete Your Kitchen’s Look

Since chimney hoods normally occupy an entire vertical wall space, why not try incorporating it as one of the décor pieces? Pick stainless steel for a contemporary feel. Prefer something more artistic? A cottage-style hood complete with metal accents will do the trick.

A Proportionate Range Hood Creates a More Comfortable Cooking Space

Typically, wall cabinets extend halfway across under cabinet hood ranges. This extension helps route the grease, smoke, and steam emitted into the vent, preventing it from attaching to—and possibly staining— kitchen cabinets and walls. It also removes hot air and lingering odors for a more enjoyable experience.

Wall-mount Hoods Take Up the Most Space
