You know that feeling when you don’t even now you need something until you see or experience it? I just visited a friend, who has a beautiful mudroom in her house and I don’t know how humans (and pets for that matter) can live without one. I decided that my next house will definitely have a mudroom and it surely goes on my wish list.

Needless to say, my mind started thinking of all the possible ideas for the future mudroom so I decided to make a list of all the cool features and décor the room could have that would work for me. The key things to consider while designing or decorating your mudroom are functionality, durability, and visual appeal. This room is “meant” to be a messy one and store anything from muddy boots to bulky outerwear to pets accessories. It needs to be able to withstand all the traffic, keep all the essentials organized, and still look pretty. After all, even though it’s hidden on the side or back of the house, you will most likely use every single day. In addition, it’s such a paradise for organizing junkies out there to unleash their creativity and make the best out of the room that makes sense for their lifestyle and family needs.

Without further ado, here is a list of 15 mudroom ideas that will want you have one in your house.

1. White Airy Mudroom with Plenty of Storage

Mudrooms need to be functional and meet the needs of everyone’s in the house. It’s a great place to experiment with different types of storage and see what works best for you and your family. Shoes can go into the drawers at the bottom. Hooks are perfect for outwear or backpacks. And those baskets with open shelving are ideal for pet accessories and many little things that typically get lost or never have a home. If you have some seasonal clothing or accessories that you don’t need on a regular basis, you can use top cabinets but getting things out of there could be a challenge if you need them all the time.

2. When Simplicity Meets Functionality

In some cases, you may not need extensive storage options in your mudroom and here is a great example of that. Mudrooms are transitional areas and we never really spend too much time being there. A bench (granted it has some extra storage!) and a coat rack might be all you need to keep the mess out of the rest of the house. These tile floors are easy to clean too, which is definitely a bonus.

3. Pet-friendly Mudroom That Your Favorite Pooch Would Approve

Just look how comfy this pooch is! This mudroom has a dedicated space for a food station, a bench for your dog, and shelves for his favorite treats. The window in the middle brings symmetry making the cabinets look less bulky even in this sophisticated grey color. The drawers under the bench are perfect to keep his favorite toys. Now everyone in the house can have their own room!

4. Open Shelving

There are some great options for cats too (though they are less picky about their spots as we know). The floor to ceiling cubbies can be a great option for the room. I love the vintage-looking sign in the middle and contrast cabinets at the bottom that remind me of the recent two-tone kitchen trend.

5. When a Separate Mudroom is Not an Option

If having a separate mudroom is not an option, try this minimalist sort-of mudroom entrance option. You can still have a storage and organization solution with a bench, a few hooks, and an open shelf. It makes the space look airy and open to the rest of the house but still creates a dedicated area at the front of the house.

6. Timeless and Durable

For those with large families, having a well functionating mudroom is not just a wish, it’s a must have. This mudroom offers just that. A well-built bench with cabinets at the top that offer plenty of storage for pretty much anything you can imagine. The diamond tile floor is a great addition to a timeless and clean décor in white and natural brown colors. The only thing I would change would be the under the bench storage. If you are working with smaller places, utilizing every single square feet of the existing space is a must.

7. Simple but Magical Space

If your mudroom is open to the rest of the house, consider adding floors that would extend beyond the space and visually unite the mudroom with other parts of your home. You want to go for easy to clean and maintain tile floors, if possible, like this stunning dark tile that looks amazing in contrast with the white walls. Even though the design looks very simple and clean, those little details such as the woven basket under the bench or the photo frame above the coat rack make this space magical.

8. Dramatic Entrance

Since mudroom are typically on a smaller size compared to the other rooms in the house, they are a great option to experiment with colors, texture, and décor in general. This deep blue wall makes quite an entrance! I love the baskets under the bench that can store gym or sports accessories, bags, or really anything else.

9. Multifunctional Mudroom

You may consider combining a mudroom with other spaces in your home such as a laundry room. Having a sink and a little place to bathe your favorite pups would be a great addition in any case, especially when it gets messy and some cleaning is in order.

10. Cubbies Rule Mudrooms

More often than not, you will find this kind of cubbies used in a mudroom. And there is a good reason why. They are very functional and versatile and can be constructed to keep low profile shoes as well as ankle or knee-high boots. Consider using the top shelf for some lovely décor, especially seasonal one as you go throughout the year.

11. Tiny but Mighty Mudrooms

Mudrooms don’t have to be a separate room. Sometimes, what you have to work with is some tiny space at the end of the hallway that serves multiple functions at once. It could be your work drop zone, electronic charging station, grocery and package drop zone, extra storage and so much more. If that’s your case, think how you can maximize all the space you have with well-constructed cubbies or cabinets. Make a list of all of the things you want to be able to accommodate first and then plan and create!

12. Mudroom Perfection

This is such an adorable mudroom that features amazing light fixture, handles, lockers, and a farmhouse style sign. This darker farmhouse tile has been recently quite popular and I can see why. This room has all the storage you can possibly wish for!

13. Drop Zone

If your mudroom primarily functions as a drop zone for mail, backpacks, shoes, boots or anything else that gets brought to your house, then these white cubbies can be super helpful to sort everything out and keep things in place. Get some decorative farmhouse pillows for the bench to tie the room with the décor in the rest of the house.

14. Mudrooms Help Keep the House Mess-Free

It’s always a plus if your mudroom has a lot of natural light or at least some of it. However, it may not be an option in your current place and while it’s great to have, the most important thing for a mudroom is the location. It needs to be close to the entrance and on the way to the rest of the house. This pet-friendly mudroom is such a delight and so clean and neat, that I would even be afraid to walk there in my boots!

15. Reach-In Closet Transformation

Be creative with the space you have. A reach-in closet can become an impressive mudroom that would feature all the things you need to keep you organized. Consider using the entire height of the closet to maximize the space.

The Truth About Using One Flooring Type in an Entire House

The word of the decade is simplification, and that is precisely what is happening within interior design. Where walls once separated every room in our homes, we now have open floorplans that showcase unobstructed spaces and bright light. This is possible because of how contractors and designers have encouraged the selection of one flooring type to extend through the entire house. https://upgradedhome.com/should-flooring-be-the-same-throughout-the-house/ The obvious benefits include better resale value, cohesiveness, and seamless transitions, but where there are positives, there will always be negatives to consider.
We asked our interior designers to share their take on this current trend and prompted homeowners who have implemented this advice in their homes to share their experiences. The greatest takeaway is the necessity for water-resistant flooring in spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, but the overall feedback was positive, encouraging a continuation of this theme in future builds and renovations. Make sure you read on to get all the best advice for installing the same floor throughout your house.
